Putin Gets Chinese Plaudits for Calling Pelosi Trip ‘Planned Provocation’ Russian President Vladimir Putin attends a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, China, February 4, 2022. A senior Chinese Communist Party official publicly praised Vladimir Putin after the Russian leader criticized Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent Taiwan visit as “a carefully planned provocation.” Beijing’s show of support for Putin follows the recent  announcement  of joint Sino-Russian military exercises on Russian territory. Putin made his first public remarks on the heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait during a global-security conference in Moscow earlier this week. “The American adventure in Taiwan wasn’t just a trip by an irresponsible politician. It was part of a deliberate and conscious U.S. strategy intended to destabilize the situation and create chaos in the region and the entire world, a blatant demonstration of disrespect for another country’s sovereignty and its own international

Pakistan’s ‘dangerous moment’: Imran Khan builds a comeback on bashing the U.S.

Imran Khan’s political message is a blend of populism and U.S.-bashing. And it’s working. Imran Khan has never been an ordinary man. Not as a sports celebrity, not as a philanthropist and certainly not now as the disgruntled former prime minister of Pakistan. In April, he was ousted from office via a parliamentary vote of no confidence — and ever since, Khan has taken to blaming the United States for  orchestrating his fall , hand in hand with his political opponents. His coalition partners had decided suddenly to part ways with him — too suddenly, according to Khan, for it to have been their idea alone. Now addressing huge crowds across the country, Khan is asking Pakistanis a simple but highly provocative question:  “Do we want to be the slaves of the United States, or do we want real freedom?” This week, Khan led his supporters on a long march from Peshawar to the capital, Islamabad — a protest that provoked violent clashes between police and his followers. There, he issued an ult

(Sohail Shahzad/Shutterstock) ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Just over three months ago, Imran Khan, the charismatic Pakistani prime minister, was abruptly  forced to step down.  As he struggled to prop up the collapsing economy and cling to power, risking a constitutional crisis, his rivals formed a hodgepodge coalition in parliament and allegedly lured a handful of Khan loyalists to defect. Shortly after midnight on April 10, he was gone in a 30-minute vote. Ever since his humiliating defeat, the former cricket star, 69, has campaigned hard for a political comeback, drawing large youthful crowds to boisterous rallies across the country. In an angrier version of the impassioned, anti-elitist rheto

Rising commodity prices and a large fiscal deficit have inflated the import bill, putting the country on the verge of a balance of payments crisis. The currency has sunk to an all-time low, while international reserves have dwindled to barely two months import cover. The government faces a tricky balancing act: On the one hand, it needs to trim the budget deficit in order to gain access to IMF funds. This led it, as part of its new FY 2023 budget, to unveil new austerity measures in June, such as cuts to fuel subsidies. On the other hand, it wants to avoid exacerbating inflation, which could pull the rug out from under the economy—or even the government itself: Protests recently broke out over the rising cost of living and blackouts caused by fuel sho
